How do we know the Lord Jesus is God? Note some key points. 1. The Old Testament promises that Messiah would be God in flesh: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given…and His name shall be called…The mighty God” (Isa 9:6). 2. The New Testament declares Him to be God: “But to the Son He says: Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever” (Heb 1:8; see also Col 2:9). 3. The Lord Jesus, while on earth, received the worship of people; for example: “Thomas answered and said to Him, ‘My Lord and my God!’” (Jn 20:28). 4. The Savior also forgave sins, causing the scribes and the Pharisees to ask, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?” (Lk 5:21). Note that we are all instructed to forgive sins (Mt 6:12) against ourselves, but Jesus was forgiving sins against God. 5. He often displayed omnipotence (Mk 4:41), omniscience (Jn 2:25) and omnipresence (Jn 3:13) while on earth. Yes, He is Emmanuel, God with us (Mt 1:23)!
