My father worked in advertising before giving his full time to preaching the Word. He had opportunity to help a young man with his first employment, who eventually rose to a key post in Mercedes-Benz Canada. Meanwhile, my father had ventured into preaching, a virtual unknown. One of his first series was a few weeks of children’s meeting in Simcoe, ON. Days were hard; funds were low; little seemed to be accomplished. Just then he received an offer from his friend. Would he be interested in a position with Mercedes? A new car every year. A hefty salary. He left the letter lying on his desk and headed out to the meeting. He began to wonder: had he made a mistake getting out of business? It certainly was a tempting offer. He pushed the thoughts out of his mind and concentrated on his message. That night two children confessed Christ as their Savior. Somehow when he returned home, the letter on the desk had lost all its appeal. “He who wins souls is wise” (Prov 11:30).
